“Off the Top of Your Head” includes the beautiful Suite dans le style ancien of French composer Mélanie Bonis, one of the most important women composers in France at the turn of the century. The program continues with Mozart’s playful and gorgeous Piano Concerto no. 17 in G major, performed by artistic director Jeffrey Sykes in an arrangement made for our ensemble. The centerpiece of the program is Kevin Puts’ epic solo cantata about the life of Albert Einstein, Einstein on Mercer Street. Kevin Puts won the Pulitzer Prize for his opera Silent Night and recently had a huge success at the Metropolitan Opera with the premiere of his opera The Hours. Einstein on Mercer Street was his first major vocal work and is considered to be his first masterpiece. The work was written for bass-baritone Timothy Jones, and Timothy will be joining us to sing the role of Einstein. With the recent success of the movie Oppenheimer, interest in Einstein’s life is at an all-time high. This work is a profound reflection on the life and work of the greatest scientist of the twentieth century. Not to be missed!
