About this Event
What did Byron know about astronomy and how did this knowledge shape his poetry? This talk looks at two main sources of astronomical information: John Bonnycastle’s Introduction to Astronomy (1786, and owned by Byron) and John Milton’s Paradise Lost, a work that responds with unique force and insight to the Copernican revolution of its time. These contexts will inform a reading of some of Byron’s major works, including his cosmological writing in Cain and Heaven and Earth.
