There has been a lot of talk about whether now is the time to take the leap away from Facebook, Instagram, and the other Meta platforms.
In SwingShoes, we have taken several steps towards making the above-mentioned platforms less necessary in general. We currently have the Swing Dance Event calendar, which can be found here: https://swingshoes.dk/calendar-of-swing-dance-events/
We would like to improve it so it becomes even better—and hopefully can get so good that you, the members and dancers of Copenhagen, can leave Facebook and Instagram without being afraid of missing out.
The outline of the current idea is:
- Filters: Create a filtering system, so it's possible to 'subscribe' only to certain dance styles (blues, balboa, lindy, etc.).
- Event type: Make a distinction between 'the size of the event', whether it's a casual social happening or a large party.
- Notifications: Figure out how (and when) you as members wish to be notified about these events. Whether it's immediately as they are created, or 3 days before the event, or a weekly/monthly summary of upcoming events. And then we'll also try to make it possible to send these notifications via different channels (email, SMS, Signal, Telegram, etc.).

On Thursday, 29th January, we will meet up at Haveselskabetsvej 3B to discuss the above. The agenda will be:
- 17:00–17:15 – Welcome. A round where people share why they have come.
- 17:15–17:40 – Discussion of an alternative event system, especially notifications. What functionality it should have for people to stop checking Facebook/Instagram for swing news.
- 17:40–18:00 – Discussion of alternative platforms that are out there and could be part of the solution: SOCii, Eventbrite, Mastodon, etc.
