Master Butoh Artist/Educator/Researcher/book Author Vangeline France is coming to NWA to offer a two day public Butoh dance workshop and excerpt performance of her most recent piece "The Slowest Wave." Vangeline is working with scientists at The University of Huston monitoring her and her dancers' brain waves while practicing butoh. Lela Besom and collaborators are taking this opportunity of proximity to bring Vangeline here for a very special offering that has long been a dream. Additionally Lela Besom, Abby Howard, Lauren Leonard, Erika Almenara, Emma Seubold and more local artists will open for Vangeline’s performance followed by a curated dance party!

Butoh is a dance developed by Tatsumi Hijakata and Kazuo Ohno starting in 1960s Japan. Out of a desire for an original dance form, and in reaction to the devastation of WWII, and Western influence, Hijakata’s Butoh employed elements including imagination, transformation, everyday life, street life, truth, eroticism, connection to the body’s inner world, and nature. Kazuo Ohno worked closely with Hijakata. His practice also involved nature, love, and beauty. Butoh dance has been passed down and transformed through students of Hijakata and Ohno. It is now practiced internationally though still esoteric, avant-garde, and stemming from its roots in Japan.
As a practice, Butoh is a dance that develops deep awareness and creative activation within oneself in connection to others and the environment. It is not a dance based on memorized steps but rather a slow transformative process wading into the depths of consciousness and subtle movement.
Workshop is adult 18+ and for folks with all levels of movement experience. It is Queer, BIPOC, LatinX celebratory and open to folks of various creed and mobility. (Please inquire regarding mobility concerns, funding, or anything else!)
