About this Event
It is no secret that more and more people want to work for themselves. There has never been a more creative generation than the young people who are entering the workforce today, and given the popularity of social media platforms, creating ways to develop a product or service and market yourself instantaneously has become possible for entrepreneurs. Many people have a great idea, or even a side hobby that could earn them money, but the thought of starting and managing a business is overwhelming. This workshop will cover several topics, including entity creation, tax return reporting, the importance of keeping accurate financial records, understanding your financial reports, how to pay yourself from your business earnings, and forecasting tips.

Instructor Info
Mary Newman, CPA
Mary is an experienced CPA and an Adjunct Professor at NC State. She has over twelve years of experience at BDO, a public accounting firm, where she specializes in providing strategic advice and support to her teams and clients. At NC State, Mary teaches ACC 280, an introductory accounting course for non-business majors. She is passionate about teaching because she believes accounting provides a strong foundation for pursing success in any field.
Mary earned an undergraduate degree in Commerce from the University of Virginia, a Masters degree in Accounting from NC State University, and a Certified Public Accounting (CPA) license from the State of North Carolina. Mary also serves on the national advisory board of the YMCA's Camp Seafarer and Sea Gull. Outside of work, Mary loves spending time outdoors boating, gardening, or traveling to the beach with her husband and three girls.
Brook Anderson, CPA
Brook started her career by volunteering at a local Community Center during college, assisting with basic accounting tasks despite having limited experience. This experience ignited Brookâs passion for filling the numbers gap and supporting others. With years of public accounting experience, a specialization in start-up companies, and a strong connection to small businesses, Brook is excited to introduce you to bookkeeping and budgeting basics. Brook is a Certified Public Accountant with a background in audit and tax. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Evangel University. Brook currently is a part of the Amy Northard CPA team- they call themselves the accountants for creatives, and serve small businesses in their bookkeeping, tax and consulting needs. Brook resides in Clayton with her husband and new baby girl. In her free time, she enjoys running on the trail with her pup, new snowboarding adventures, and camping with her family.
