5:30pm (Double Feature):
BURNING AN ILLUSION (1981 — 2K Restoration!)
PRESSURE (1976 — 4K Restoration!)
Black Revivalist, Cushy Collective and 7th House are proud to present a day of films from the Caribbean diaspora. Two double features, four films, in a single day, raising funds for Hurricane Melissa relief.
The program features Menelik Shabazz’s 1988 documentary TIME AND JUDGEMENT: A DIARY OF A 400 YEAR EXILE, paired with D. Elmina Davis’ OMEGA RISING WOMEN OF RASTAFARI from the same year; followed by Shabazz’s debut narrative feature BURNING AN ILLUSION (1981) alongside Horace Ové’s PRESSURE (1976), respectively recognized as the second and first Black British feature films to be written and directed by Black filmmakers.
Burning an Illusion follows Pat Williams, a young Black woman in London who longs for a better life. When her charming but aimless boyfriend Del is falsely arrested and mercilessly beaten by the police, their paths veer in unexpected directions, and Pat begins a journey toward emotional maturity, emancipation, and political awakening.
Pressure follows Tony, a British-born younger son of an immigrant family from Trinidad in 1970s London, who finds himself adrift between two cultures and caught between his parents’ church-going conformity and his brother’s Black Power militancy. As he struggles to find work and endures discrimination and racism, he finds comradeship with his Black friends in the streets and searches for a sense of purpose.
Doors open at 1:30 pm, first screening begins at 2:00 pm. Time and Judgement, 85 mins. Omega Rising Women of Rastafari , 52 mins. Burning an Illusion, 105 mins. Pressure, 136 mins. There will be a 1 hour intermission in between the double features and a 15 min intermission in between Burning an Illusion and Pressure.
