About this Event
This two-hour workshop led by Steele Studio will guide you in the mindful yet exhilarating technique of bundle dyeing, providing you opportunity to play with various ingredients and fabrics. You’ll learn how to bundle dye textiles using the steaming method - something that can be recreated at home with minimal equipment - and through the tactile activity you’ll recognise where natural colour comes from, the considerations you may need to make to best extract it, and how to forage for materials yourself.
This is more of a fun investigatory workshop than technical, though host Stephanie will offer guidance on mordanting, foraging best practice, and textile aftercare.
What you will learn:
- What bundle dyeing is and how surprising it is!
- Appropriate materials and equipment for this practice, including a basic overview of natural pigments
- How to mordant and prepare a fabric for bundle dyeing, and fabric recommendations
- Composing plant material and fabric wrapping for various dyeing patterns
- Foraging and plant storage best practice
What you will receive:
- Guidance on the art of bundle dyeing for fabric
- All materials, including colour ingredients and pre-mordanted organic textiles (cotton or bamboo), with finished works yours to keep
- All required loaned tools and equipment
- An insight and connection with seasonal and local colour
- A follow-up downloadable guide with all covered information and additional resources
