About this Event

Join the Indian River Chapter in maintaining the Florida Trail in Herky Huffman/Bull Creek WMA. We will be maintaining approximately 15 miles of trail. Work will include mowing, lopping, blazing, and hand sawing. The Florida Trail follows the west side of Bull Creek Wildlife Management Area along the old railroad grade. Ties and hardware remain along the route. Pines in the northeast corner of the property still have "catfaces" (areas on trees where iron gutters were attached to harvest the pitch). Additional trailside history includes a small cemetery in Bull Creek, flow wells, and the remains of a turpentine still and sawmill. Hikers have the opportunity of viewing sandhill cranes and wood storks along with cattle. Bull Creek offers hikers views of scenic creeks, expanses of pine flatwoods and floodplain swamp. A map of Herky Huffman/Bull Creek WMA can be viewed here.Deer hunting is on hold in Bull Creek during the weekend of this work party. There is no charge for camping.
