Join us for a first-of-its-kind opportunity to talk story with inspiring education leader, Catherine Payne, reflecting on a career of impact in Hawaiʻi's public schools. In a rare talk story setting, Jim Scott, an influential school leader in his own right, and Catherine will reflect on her career, sharing stories of change moving at the speed of trust: how to manage trust given the context of the education system, the skills needed to build trust and wield it effectively in service of students, and how to empower school teams during ever-present times of change.

Catherine Payne
Catherine Payne began her career with the Hawaii DOE in 1974 as an English teacher at Nanakuli High. In 1984 she moved to Waianae High as vice-principal, and in 1986 to principal of Olomana School. From 1995 to 2010 she served as principal of Farrington High School. She was selected as the State Secondary Principal of the Year in 1991 and as a National Milken Educator in 1995. In 2011 the YWCA honored her leadership. Since retiring in 2010 she has worked as an educational consultant, chaired the State Public Charter School Commission, and served as chair of the Hawaii State Board of Education.
Jim Scott
Jim Scott has worked in three independent schools over 42 years. Most recently he was the President for 25 years of Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii, a K-12 school with 3,750 students, and the largest single-campus independent school in America. During his tenure, Punahou raised over $500 million in capital and endowed gifts to renew and improve learning environments and to significantly increase the economic diversity of the student body.
Jim’s national leadership includes serving as a trustee on the NAIS Board and on the College Board. He chaired the SSATB Board (now the Enrollment Management Association) and currently chairs the Klingenstein Center Advisory Board at Teachers College, Columbia University. He is a former President of the Country Day School Headmasters Association. Regionally, Jim has been the Board Chair of both the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools and the Pacific Northwest Association of Independent Schools. During his career, he has chaired 10 regional accreditation teams. He is currently the Board Chair of the East-West Center at the University of Hawaii.
