About this Event
Most women spend a good deal of time feeling dissatisfied with their bodies, and girls express this same view as early as the preschool years. These negative feelings affect mental and physical well-being, the ability to be fully present in the world, and are associated with disordered eating and eating disorders.
As the biggest “influencers” on young girls’ body image development, moms and other role models can change thenarrative for the next generation of girls and women and increase their own well-being in the process.
Participants will gain tools to reflect on and improve their own body image in the process and health professionals can benefit from actionable, science-based tips for clients.
The discussion will be interactive and based on participant needs and questions, but we expect to address:
• Where body image “resides” and why this knowledge is the key for developing resilience in the face of toxic cultural influences
• Characteristics and personal history of women that contribute to negative body image and how to address them
• What it really means to have a positive body image, as supported by science• The ways that women influence their daughters’ body image: positives and pitfalls
• How to set the stage for healthy body image in girls in early, middle, and late childhood
• Cultivating wellness without buying into diet culture
Participants are encouraged to read the book ahead of time, but this isn't mandatory.
