This three-hour course explores how Buffy transformed television storytelling. We’ll examine how the series draws on classic narrative structures like the hero’s journey, while using monsters as metaphors for adolescence, identity, and growing up. We’ll also explore its feminist legacy, celebrating its groundbreaking portrayal of female power, while considering how this reads through a more complex modern lens.
We’ll also look at how Buffy redefined what television could achieve: blending horror, fantasy, comedy, and soap opera into something entirely new, and pioneering long-form storytelling that shaped the future of TV.
Across the session, we’ll explore the creation of the show and take a closer look at key iconic episodes, examining how Buffy plays with format, genre, and mythology to create a piece of television history that changed everything.
