Indian Painting at the End of Empire

Join the Roberta Buffett Institute for a faculty research lunchtime talk series on the first Friday of every month. Faculty members give a half-hour talk intended for a broad, multidisciplinary audience of Northwestern students, faculty, and staff, followed by a conversational Q&A. Lunch is provided beginning at 12:15 p.m.

May's Buffett First Friday Lunch will feature Yuthika Sharma, Assistant Professor of Art History at Northwestern University's Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences.

As the Late Mughal Empire (1707–1857) was drawn into the colonial orbit of the British East India Company in India, artists reformulated and refreshed their approach towards a longstanding model of simplicity, moving their emphasis from courtly subjects to the city. Focusing on Delhi, the longstanding capital of the Late Mughals and the British Indian Empire, Professor Sharma will highlight a crucial phase of the intellectualization of Mughal and Company painting in the age of print, photography, and rising nationalism.
