Buckthorn Battle – Save Our Seine

A CITO event by 1purplemonkeydishwasher1
Join Purple Monkey and Save Our Seine as we work together to help restore one of Winnipeg's treasured natural areas by removing European Buckthorn, one of Manitoba's most invasive plant species.
Members of Save Our Seine will be on-site throughout the event to demonstrate how to identify and safely remove European Buckthorn. Whether you're a seasoned volunteer or trying a CITO for the very first time, no experience is necessary—we'll show you everything you need to know!
What is European Buckthorn?
European Buckthorn (*Rhamnus cathartica*) is a non-native shrub or small tree introduced from Europe in the late 1800s. While originally planted as an ornamental hedge, it has spread aggressively throughout Manitoba's forests and natural areas.
Buckthorn forms dense thickets that:
* Block sunlight from reaching native wildflowers and young trees.
* Outcompete native shrubs and vegetation.
* Reduce biodiversity by creating poor habitat for wildlife.
* Alter soil conditions, making it harder for native plants to recover.
By removing buckthorn, we're helping restore healthy forests and giving native plants the opportunity to thrive once again.
**What to Bring**
* Sturdy footwear suitable for uneven terrain.
* Weather-appropriate clothing.
* Work gloves if you have them (a limited number may be available).
* Water and insect repellent are recommended.
All necessary tools will be provided, and volunteers from Save Our Seine will be available to offer demonstrations and assistance throughout the event.
