Buchan x Hickory Site Visit to The Melbourne Walk

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

• A deposit must be made to secure attendance at the event to ensure full participation. After the event concludes, the deposited money will be refunded to your bank account.
• Students must bring their own PPE, which includes Hard hat, Steel Capped boots and Hi-vis vest and will be unable to attend the event without it.
  The Melbourne Walk site encapsulates eight separate buildings of different eras on an entire block, uniquely placed at the intersection of Melbourne’s primary shopping street, Bourke Street Mall, and the city’s north-south retail laneway network. Bounded by the confluence of the four public street interfaces, all differing in character and function, Buchan’s design creates high value high exposure retail frontages to the north and south of the site. A new arcade provides continuity to Melbourne’s primary pedestrian axis, along the north-south laneways, enticing foot traffic and public engagement. Leveraging the site’s central city location, the redevelopment creates a place that people will be drawn to, generating a sustainable shopping/dining destination precinct along with two hotel brands above – Holiday Inn and Hotel Indigo – offering over 450 available rooms and an authentically local hotel experience for guests. Buchan’s carefully curated design response holistically considers materiality, texture, scale, proportion and detail in context of the history of this site – integrating four heritage listed building facades with distinctive, contemporary building forms to enhance the characterful aesthetic of the distinctly ‘Melbourne’ streetscapes they inhabit. The social history of the site, with its quirky, historic retailers such as E.W Cole, Sydney Myer, and James Hosie was a starting point for the design narrative. The project is anticipated to be completed early 2025.

  Event Details:
  8:30 am: DES representatives arrive at the meeting point early to greet students and assist with sign-in.
  8:45 AM: Students arrive and everyone signs in at Buchan.
  9:00 - 9:30 AM: Project Presentation.
  9:30 AM: Depart from Buchan and take tram to The Melbourne Walk.
  9:45 - 10:45 AM: Sign in at Hickory site office and participate in the Site Tour.
  10:45 AM: End of activities for Group 1.

  Meeting Point Location: The Causeway Lane & Bourke St Mall corner (Google Maps link)
  Event Details:
  10:30am: DES representatives arrive at the meeting point early to greet students and assist with sign-in.
  10:45am: Students arrive and everyone signs in
  11:00am: Sign in at Hickory site office, and Site Tour
  12:00pm: Leave The Melbourne Walk and take tram to Buchan
  12:15-12:45pm: Project Presentation
  12:45pm: End of activities for Group 2.
