Tucson author, mother, disability rights activist/advocate, Emmy-award winning documentary star Adiba Nelson will be signing copies of her memoir, Ain’t That A Mother, at Flora’s Market in Tucson, Arizona on Saturday, June 10, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Ain’t That A Mother will be available for purchase in paperback, sold by local bookshop, Mostly Books.
The late morning event will include a reading by Nelson herself, a meet and greet with photo opportunities, book signings, and an intimate Q&A session hosted by local mother, writer, and friend of Nelson, Nicole Dahl. In addition, passed hors d’oeuvres and Nelson’s favorite cocktails and mocktails will be served as signature drinks from the cash bar (signature cocktails AND mocktails).
Since its hardcover release in 2022, Nelson’s memoir has received accolades from Bustle (Best Book of the Month pick), Ms. Magazine (Book of the Month), Essence (feature family book pick), and Shondaland (#1 pick for books on motherhood).
Though Ain’t That a Mother is Nelson’s memoir debut, it ain’t her first book rodeo. Nelson authored the children’s book Meet ClaraBelle Blue, an illustrated story about a little girl with disabilities who isn’t so different after all. That book has sold over 7,000 copies worldwide and garnered Nelson a two-book deal with MacMillan Publishing’s children’s division.
Nelson is a frequent NPR contributor, a selected featured speaker at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, and a longtime Tucsonan. As a single, black mother of a brilliant, gorgeous, strong-willed daughter with medical challenges, Nelson has garnered her fair share of stories over the years, some heartbreaking, some hilarious (most a little bit of both).
Nelson, Flora’s Market Run, and Mostly Books invite the community of Tucson to show up on the morning of June 10, 2023, to celebrate the soft launch of this paperback that will change how you view mothers and motherhood.
This event is free, and all are welcome. However, seating is limited, arriving a bit early is advised.
