About this Event

Time and Location

The conference will be taking place on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th July 2023 at the University of Edinburgh. The full programme will be released shortly but runs from 9am on Thursday to 5pm on Friday (BST). Lunch is provided for both days and included in the cost of registration. There will be an optional drinks reception and walking tour on Thursday evening (details TBC).

Introductions

We will be running an introduction service at the conference. If you are attending alone or feel anxious about your first conference, you have the option to be introduced to a fellow delegate in your field or area of research (either by email or in-person). If you wish to take advantage of this, please select it on your registration form.

Bursaries

BSECS is glad to be able to support postgraduate and early career scholars to attend this conference. Twelve BSECS bursaries, all of £120 each, will be available for delegates whose papers have been accepted, and who are either registered for a higher degree at a higher education institution or are within five years of the award of their PhD. These bursaries are intended to contribute towards the travels costs of delegates who do not have access to financial support from their home institutions and/or funding body, or whose sources of funding support are limited. Precedence will be given to full-time students and to early career scholars with no current academic affiliation. Please note that the bursary will not be paid until after the conference has taken place. Application forms for the bursaries will be sent to delegates with a paper accepted.

Accomodation and Travel

You may want to organise your own accommodation, but Edinburgh also has a range of on-campus accommodation, the cheapest being the Chancellor’s Court. On the Pollock estate, there is the option of the Scholar and Scott Hotels. You might also want to consider KM Hotel and Apartments which are a bit closer to the central area.

The Old Medical School is located in Edinburgh's Southside. The nearest bus stops are Lauriston Place and Bristo Square. It is a 15 minute walk or 11 minute bus from Edinburgh Waverley rail station. If you are flying into Edinburgh Airport, you can take the train to St Andrew's Square and alight at Princes Street (15 minute walk to Old Medical School). Alternatively, take the 100 Airlink bus to the city centre and bus or walk. If you are driving, we encourage you to use one of the city's Park and Ride services.

Access

Both of the conference's rooms are listed as wheelchair accessible and are fitted with induction loops and microphones. If you have any specific access requirements or concerns, please contact the reps via email: [email protected]

Theme

In his 1990 work, Poetics of Relation, Martiniquean writer Édouard Glissant examined the construction of Caribbean identity, for both the coloniser and the colonised, through the concepts of “Errantry” and “Exile”. In particular, he explored this through the notion of “roots”: questioning what it means to be unrooted, the nomadic search for roots, and the movement of rooted identities through colonial expansion and displacement. Our conference takes its theme from Glissant’s essay, broadening his focus to consider wider topics related to “Errantry, Exile and Elsewhere” in the long eighteenth century. We are excited to be hosting this conference at the University of Edinburgh, where these concepts are particularly poignant in relation to eighteenth-century Scotland, which was largely defined by Jacobite exile, forced errantry through Clearance, and involvement in British military expansion overseas.
