Clémence Manachère and Polina Pohozha are two musicians from different worlds whose paths crossed in the misty mountains of Italy, there they spend 34-days at Residency at Casa della Musica
San Michele on free improvisation practices.Their music is a fusion of classical, jazz, and free improvisation, transforming sound into a living, breathing organism. Their EP was born spontaneously recorded in a single take, in a moment of complete musical
unity. Now, living in different countries, they continue to seek points of convergence, dissolving once again into each other’s
sound.Their collaboration an exploration oftextures and timbres, a meeting of structure and chaos, a dialogue ofcontrasts that becomes something whole.Clémence Manachère is a jazz flute player, soprano saxophone player, and composer from the seaside mountains of the southwest of France. The inspirations for her music span
from jazz to contemporary and classical music, with influences ranging from Frank Zappa to Brazilian music. Pushing the boundaries of composition and improvisation is a key focus for Clémence, whether it involves odd meters, microtonality, or both.
At age 10, Clémence began learning classical piano, studying for eight years at the Pau Conservatory of Music. At 14, she participated in the festival Les Enfants du Jazz and heard Elvin Jones perform live in Barcelonnette, her grandmother’s village in the Alpes- de-Haute-Provence. At 16, she got her first flute and began learning the instrument as an autodidact. From ages 18 to 24, she studied architecture between France and Mexico City. After finishing studying architecture, she traveled to Brazil where she got deeply inspired by the richness of Brazilian music. Back in Europe, she studied jazz flute at the Musikschule Berlin-Neukölln and, since October 2017, has added soprano saxophone, studying at Hamburg’s Hochschule für Musik und Theater. Clémence also took rhythm and drumming lessons with Mark Nauseef for two years. Mark’s rhythmic visions have been a significant influence on her composing and improvising. In order to bring her compositions to life, she launched her projectClémence Manachère Unterwasser in 2018. She has already recorded three albums with Unterwasser, released in 2020, 2022, and in 2024 under the JazzHausMusik label. She has received the “Mixed Generations” grant from the Feldtmann Foundation and the Jazz Federation Hamburg for a tour with Unterwasser and Norwegian trombone player Helge Sunde in April and November 2022. In 2023 and 2024, Clémence was part of the Claussen-Simon Stiftung stART.up program and in January 2024, she won the Werner Burkhardt Musikpreis.
Polina Pohozha (b. 1997, Odesa, Ukraine) is a pianist, composer, sound artist, and artist based in Gothenburg, Sweden. After completing her master’s degree at A.V. Nezhdanova Odesa National Academy of Music, she was forced to move to Sweden due to the full- scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. There, she began studying musical composition at the Gotland School of Music Composition. Her musical practice is currently focused on exploring identity—national, musical, and deeply psychological—through experimental solo and group free improvisation, musical
composition, and piano performance. In her free improvisation practice, she works with prepared piano, voice, and objects,
exploring timbre and textures as part of dramaturgy. Her music is an organic flow, a wave, a spontaneous dialogue between structure and chaos, where classical tradition, folk echoes, jazz, minimalism, and free improvisation intertwine. She is inspired by visual imagery, color, and feelings translating these elements into sound. As a composer, Polina perceives sound through its relationships and connections, exploring mixtures and musical time while improvising through narrative storytelling that
emerges in the moment of writing. Her composition teachers include Joseph Lake and Ida Lundén, and she has also received
tutoring and participated in masterclasses with Theresia Ulvo Farzia Fallah, George Lewis, Malin Bång, and Oscar Bianchi.
She actively performs solo and as part of various ensembles, such as Kult., VARP., and Ranges Collective. In February 2024,VARP released their first experimental album, Deal with Bergman (label RIGHT BRAIN RECORDS), which explores group improvisation and
sound experimentation. During her residency at Casa della Musica San Michele in 2024 (Italy), she recorded two albums with Ranges Collective and Ensemble Collettivo Crisis, as well as an EP with Clémence Manachère, set for release in 2026. Polina is currently
working on her solo free improvisation/composition album.
Her piece Fireflies for mixed ensemble will be performed at Archipel Festival in April in Switzerland. In August, she will collaborate with NYKA on her string quartet In The Box.
Polina has participated as a performer and composer at international festivals such as 2days2nights, Dzenzelivka Classical Week, Kontinent Dalsland, Påskfestivalen Gotland,
Ljudvågor, Bergmanveckan, FRST, Festspillene (Klassik Link), and the International Young Composers Academy Ticino. As a composer, she has collaborated with
Musikkonservatoriet Falun, GotlandsMusiken, Ivo Nilsson, Jörgen Pettersson, Uppsala Kammarsolister, ICE and others. She has received grants and scholarships from DBW, Region Gotland, Konstmusiksyster, and STIM. She was also an artist-in-residence at the Bergman Estate on Fårö at the Improvisation Residency at Casa della Musica San Michele.
