Bryn Haworth Bio
Lancashire born, acclaimed slide guitarist, Bryn Haworth, is a singer-songwriter and a top performer who has been delighting audiences with his own unique brand of rock, country and gospel blues for over 40 years.
Bryn came to London from Lancashire in the late sixties and joined “Les Fleur de Lys” a Motown/soul band which became house band for Atlantic Records in England. The band had a residency at London's The Speakeasy Club and on one occasion Haworth enjoyed a jam-session, playing "Red House", on stage with Jimi Hendrix. He left the band in ’69 and travelled to California; from there he toured extensively in the US in various American bands and was a founder member of Wolfgang, a band put together and managed by the legendary Bill Graham, appearing on bills with such artists as Led Zeppelin, Jefferson Airplane, Taj Mahal, Grateful Dead, The Moody Blues and others. In 1973 he returned to England and was signed to Island Records where he made his first solo LP, “Let The Days Go By”.
He has recorded as a session guitar player with top musicians including Chris de Burgh, Joan Armatrading, and Gerry Rafferty. Bryn also writes his own songs, and has had several of his own compositions recorded by other artists including Lulu, Sandy Denny, Cliff Richard and Mary Black.
Bryn recorded 3 further albums for Island Records and A&M.
During this period he made numerous radio and TV appearances, including sessions for John Peel and appearances on BBC’s Old Grey Whistle Test, as well as touring extensively in England and Europe supporting such artists as Traffic, Bad Company, Gallagher & Lyle and Fairport Convention. His prowess as a guitarist was recognised by Alexis Korner who played Bryn's records on his BBC programme.
“Island had a restaurant/cafe thing; they encouraged musicians to sit down, eat and talk with each other. There was a rehearsal studio and a recording studio in the block at St. Peter’s Square in Hammersmith, so it was a really good, creative environment. They’d laid it out very well. You’d meet and eat and talk and chat. I remember Steve Winwood saying, ‘What’s that you’re playing?’ and I said, ‘It’s a mandolin.’ The next time I saw him, he’d bought one and was playing it. It was just humming, a really happening company.
“I talked to Eno a lot, from Roxy Music. He was always intellectual, reading books and talking about sounds and things. He was fascinating to talk to.
Bryn recalls: “Robert Palmer was great. He was working with Lowell George from Little Feat, who produced his album Sneaking Sally Down the Alley. He said, ‘Would you like me and Lowell George to produce your album?’ I thought, ‘That would be interesting!’ but it had all been tied up with the record company. There was a lot of interaction. It was very encouraging.”
As Haworth has been the UK’s premier slide guitarist, he has been dubbed, ‘the British Lowell George’. Did George influence his own playing style?
“Definitely. At the time, there was three: Ry Cooder, Duane Allman – both completely different styles – and then Lowell George came along, who had a different style too, because he used a lot of compression on his guitar that gave him a lot of sustain.
“All three influenced me. I particularly loved the melodic side of what they did. It was a new thing back then, slide guitar. There was a lot of innovation going on.”
In 1974 Bryn and his wife Sally became Christians and this powerful experience has brought a strong gospel influence into his music. He has since made 14 CDs including his latest Ready Or Not. He now travels extensively, performing concerts in a wide variety of venues including concert halls, churches and prisons across the UK.
Tonight in concert he will be singing songs from his new CD, Ready Or Not, plus some popular favourites, in an entertaining and eclectic mix of Gospel, Blues and Country Rock.
