With love and gratitude, we honor a long, full life of service and dedication, and announce the passing of our father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Bruce Atkinson Wight, most recently a resident of Spring City, Utah, at the age of 84 years. After enduring much, his final hours were peaceful as he passed away just before noon on Saturday, March 14, 2026, while residing at Good Life Senior Living in Mount Pleasant, Utah.
Bruce was born July 4, 1941, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Clinton Rowland Wight and Eva Estella Atkinson, during a very eventful time as World War II was in progress and Pearl Harbor was bombed just six months later. His mother missed out on all the festivities, but said she had her own great celebration that day. Bruce was the second of three children, with an older brother Robert (Bob) and younger brother Vern Clinton (Clint). A few years later his mother was divorced and when Bruce was 11 years old, she married Jesse Beagley. Then followed three sisters and five more brothers. Linda Barlow, LaMar, Eve Dockstader, Evyonne Zitting, Rocky, Rodney, Norman and Clairen.
Bruce married his high school sweetheart, Gloria Lorraine Archibald, on November 1, 1958, in Granite, Utah. Together for more than 65 years, they raised a beautiful family of 14 children. Dale (Olga), Jullianne Wayman (Joseph), Debra Keate (Lonnie), Jeffrey (Nancy), Mark (Andrea), Matthew (Kathleen), D. Andrew (Elizabeth), Anita Dutson (David), Heather (LeRoy), Jonathan, Elizabeth Chatwin (Samuel), Aaron (Ruth), and Daniel (Heather). Bruce was very proud of his large family and posterity, including more than 100 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and at least one great-great grandchild. He is preceded in death by his brothers Vern and LaMar, sister Linda, his beloved wife Gloria, son Jeffrey, and an infant daughter.
Bruce was a hard worker and had many skills and talents including inventing useful gadgets. He could build or repair just about anything. Devoted to his family and his religion, and dedicated to providing for his family, he often worked two jobs at the same time and then in later years, he went through college to earn his Bachelor’s Degree while working a full-time job. He was always striving to improve his situation and his surroundings. He enjoyed growing up around farm animals, and eventually turned his property into a small farm, planting a large orchard, hundreds of trees, and a large garden all with a specialized watering system. He kept a variety of animals over the years, helping his children learn a good work ethic and responsibility. Bruce loved adventure, RV travel and the outdoors with his family and each year he planned fishing, camping and road trips, as well as frequent picnic outings when we never knew where we were going until we got there.
After a bad fall just before his birthday in July 2025, he spent 3 months in rehab and then moved to Good Life Senior Living where he was cared for in the kindest and most attentive way. We will forever be grateful to Rachel and the wonderful folks there who treated him like family and made these last few months as comfortable and enjoyable as possible for him.
Bruce was very devoted to his wife, Gloria, and in life they were rarely parted for long. He has sorely missed her since her passing and has gone on now to join her. Although he leaves a large empty space in our family and will be immensely missed, we are so grateful that he is free from pain and is now going on to receive his eternal reward as we celebrate his life and the legacy he has left us.
Graveside services will be held Monday, March 23, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. in the Spring City Cemetery with a viewing from 10: 30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at Rasmussen Mortuary (96 N 100 W, Mt. Pleasant). Online condolence at rasmussenmortuary.com
