About this Event
Brownman's HOLIDAY MADNESS
Internationally acclaimed jazz trumpet player BROWNMAN ALI's annual Jazz Christmas show is a unique reading of classic holiday tunes featuring a hand-picked cast of some of Toronto's top-shelf jazz & studio musicians. Each year during the holidays Brownman specially arranges and re-orchestrates many of the quintessential archetypes of the season, with his own unique visions.
Imagine, if you will:
-- "Frosty the Snowman" with a Cuban Songo twist
-- "We Three Kings", in 4, as a hip-hop track
-- "Do You Hear What I Hear" as down-tempo soul
-- "Here Comes Santa Claus", as drum'n'bass
-- "God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman", as a 90's boom-bap hip-hop track
-- "Rudolph" as a hard-swinging Coltrane tune
-- "Jingle Bells" in 7/8, like Brubeck might have done it
-- "Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire" as a Brazilian Samba
-- "Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" like a 50's Miles tunes
-- "Silent Night" as a funk ballad
All these and more!
"Holiday cheer interpreted and re-imagined by one of the nation's most acclaimed modern jazz iconoclasts." -- NOW magazine

CODA magazine writes:
“... capturing the essence of the later years in Miles Davis’ life, his electric period, without imitation. Brownman's sound is uniquely his own, yet echoes with the sounds of ‘Bitches Brew’ and ‘In a Silent Way’ right down to Miles’ use of electronics while still managing to stay grounded in the sounds of today. Clearly paying apt tribute to Brownman’s NYC mentor Randy Brecker".
Buffalo News writes:
“Awards are nice, naturally, but to dig what Brownman is doing, you’ve got to see him live. I had a chance to do just that over the summer when Brownman fronted his killer trio ... I came away with a blown mind. This guy’s got chops galore, soul to match, and a sense of phrasing that recalls many of the greats, but suggests itself to be his own.”
Toronto’s NOW Magazine writes:
“It’s incredible the energy output this group can generate... my ears would swear they were hearing a whole electrified orchestra”.
