The Brown University Orchestra, under the direction of composer Eric Nathan, celebrates the centennial of Ottorino Respighi’s thrilling tone poem, “The Pines of Rome” (1924), as the centerpiece to a wide-ranging program that explores the tradition of immersive orchestral concert experiences. Respighi’s work is famous in a long tradition of works that feature off-stage musicians. The concert program looks back to Italian Renaissance composer Giovanni Gabrieli’s “Symphonae Sacrae” which are some of the earliest works using antiphonal choirs of instruments, as well as the local premiere of Brown University professor Eric Nathan’s “Opening,” which surrounds the audience in sound by players stationed around the concert hall. Brown student Vatsal Vemrui (’25), winner of the BUO Concerto Competition, is the featured soloist in Rachmaninoff’s First Piano Concerto. This concert takes place at the Lindemann Performing Arts Center. Tickets: $15 regular; $7 senior; $3 student. Program
