The Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives’ Brown Bag Lunch Series welcomes Brenda Wahler to present about James Ben Ali Haggin and his business operations with Marcus Daly.James Ben Ali Haggin allegedly handed Marcus Daly his checkbook with every blank check signed and said, “draw and keep drawing.” Haggin's fortune, built over 30 years of struggle, gave him compassion for a young and struggling Daly. His checkbook funded the Anaconda smelter and kept the company afloat through price wars, attempts to corner the copper market, fires, sabotage and mine disasters. Haggin and Daly were also bonded closely through their love of racehorses and between them created a turf empire that still influences modern horse racing.
The Brown Bag presentation will begin at noon on Wednesday, September 10th, 2025, and will last about an hour. The presentation will be held in the auditorium at the Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives located at 17 W. Quartz Street. Guests are encouraged to bring a sack lunch. Coffee and water will be provided.
Brown Bag Lunches are held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month. Upcoming lectures will focus on topics of local interest. For more information, contact the Archives at (406)782-3280.
