About this Event
91-year-old conductor/composer/pianist Peter Fuchs has enjoyed an eventful musical career, and the South Florida resident is now an Internet personality with a daily live-streamed Facebook show that he and his wife began producing in their apartment during the worst of the pandemic. On “Stump the Maestro,” callers try to find popular songs and shows that Fuchs can’t immediately pick out on his piano, but they rarely succeed. A Holocaust survivor, Fuchs first taught himself to play several instruments while he was a child hiding from the Nazis in Holland. Eventually reunited with his parents, Fuchs came to the U.S. at 17 where, two years later, he joined the Army. His talents quickly blossomed as he began writing songs and producing shows for his fellow soldiers. The GI Bill allowed him to obtain a formal musical education, after which he played piano in, and conducted, countless Broadway shows and musical tours, along the way composing for the stage and ballet. Fuchs wrote and conducted Miami’s massive Bicentennial celebration; and when not touring with his singing wife Veronica as a duo act, he has regularly conducted several orchestras in Miami-Dade and Broward, including his latest project, the Broward Pops Orchestra. Fuchs’ own music is melodic, jazz-infused and audience-pleasing. The Broward Pops Orchestra will present a mélange of Fuchs’ compositions with the maestro himself on the podium and at the piano, ranging from nostalgic songs he wrote as a young soldier, to ballet scores, an overture and an original piano concerto. Anyone who likes Broadway, jazz, and/or or American popular music will enjoy this convenient and inexpensive concert.
