Join Brookside Farm Museum on Sunday, April 21 from 9 am – 3 pm as it kicks off its efforts to regenerate biodiversity at its site in the heart of East Lyme. Please join us at the kick-off event at 33 Society Road, Niantic on Sunday, April 21 from 9 am – 3 pm. A presentation by Pollinator Pathway East Lyme Founder Marjorie Meekhoff will begin at 9:30 am. Materials on Homegrown National Park will be on hand including information to join the inaugural book club studying Nature’s Best Hope, by the HNP founder and famed ecologist Doug Tallamy. Participants are encouraged to bring pruning shears, heavy gloves, and face masks. Lunch will be provided for every community member who RSVPs and puts in some work to clear invasives under the direction of Meekhoff and Perch. The event is rain or shine.
The Homegrown National Park movement is a collective effort of individual homeowners, property owners, land managers, farmers, and anyone with some soil to plant in…to start a new HABITAT® by planting native plants and removing most invasive plants. It is the largest cooperative conservation project ever conceived or attempted.
Brookside Farm Museum, which cares for the historic site at 33 Society Road, centrally located between the community center and two public schools, intends to create a diverse ecosystem capable of sustaining a flourishing natural environment. Using the methods outlined in the Homegrown National Park template, Brookside hopes that a commitment of time and muscle by many neighbors will make its dream of creating new ecological networks that will enlarge populations of plants and animals while making the space visitor-friendly a reality.
