About this Event
Meet the Black Brooklynites who defined New York City’s most populous borough through their search for social justice in Prithi Kanakamedala‘s new book (NYU Press).
This is a story of land, home, labor, of New Yorkers past, and the legacy they left us. Join Prithi (Bronx Community College & CUNY Graduate Center) as we honor this unique nineteenth-century chapter in New York City’s history. Prithi will read excerpts from the book, followed by a reception. Books will be available for sale at the event.
Prithi Kanakamedala is a Full Professor of History at Bronx Community College CUNY. She is also a faculty member in the M.A. in Liberal Studies Program, and the inaugural faculty coordinator of the Public Scholarship Practice Space (PS2) housed at the Center for the Humanities at CUNY Graduate Center. Her research looks at community-building, race, and citizenship in Brooklyn and New York’s 19th-century free Black communities. She is also an active public historian in New York City and has worked with a range of cultural organizations. Brooklynites is her first full-length book. https://prithikanaka.com
