Join us in celebration of the NYC Public Health Corps’ (PHC) 1st anniversary!
About this Event

September 29th marks the one-year anniversary of the New York City Public Health Corps (PHC), a joint initiative between Health and Hospitals (H+H) and the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYCDOHMH).
In recognition of this anniversary, we are celebrating the work and partnerships created to address the needs of New Yorkers as they recover and manage through the COVID19 pandemic; by hosting the event series “Public Health Corps in Your Borough”.
PHC in Your Borough will occur September 17th to September 24th, with one event in each borough. This event will highlight CHW’s from local CBOs, FQHCs, DOHMH and H+H that have been pivotal in making the first year of the program such a success.

This event will include two parts:
(Part 1) A recognition ceremony highlighting Public Health Corps CHW’s from local CBOs, FQHCs, DOHMH and H+H that have been pivotal in making the first year of the program a success.
(Part 2) A fall festival, that is a public celebration with community engagement activities (i.e., massage therapy, photo booths), health screenings and job resources meant to showcase partner resources, engage the public and provide a celebratory space for CHW’s.

Background

The NYC Public Health Corps (PHC), is an innovative effort created to expand the public health workforce, strengthen community health infrastructure, and promote health equity for the communities hit hardest by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Health Department and NYC Health + Hospitals will lead the initiative.

A key component of the PHC initiative has been the contracted relationships with Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs); and the role of Community Health Workers (CHWs) who have been on the frontline, addressing vaccine hesitancy, distribution of key COVID19 information and resources, and connection to services to address missed screenings and Long COVID resources.

PHC initiatives target a broad spectrum of public health needs—from helping people get vaccinated to counseling residents about diabetes and depression. But each initiative shares a common goal: promoting the health of New Yorkers. Building on the lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic, the PHC will strengthen community health across NYC by empowering a knowledgeable workforce that has the trust of the residents they serve, in part because they often come from the same neighborhood.
