The TRIO Pre-Collegiate Programs at Bronx Community College invites alumni, friends, and family to our 3rd annual gala.

The Higher Education Act of 1965 (Pub. L. No. 89-329) (HEA) was legislation signed into United States law on November 8, 1965, as part of President Lyndon Johnson's Great Society domestic agenda. The law was intended to strengthen the educational resources of our colleges and universities and to provide financial assistance for students in postsecondary and higher education. It increased federal money given to universities, created scholarships, gave low-interest loans for students, and established a National Teachers Corps. The "financial assistance for students" is covered in Title IV of the HEA.

UPWARD BOUND CLASSIC (UB)

Number of Participants Served: 107 Annually

Profile: Funded on the Bronx Community College campus since 1979, the Upward Bound Program (BCCUB) is a federal grant funded by the United States Department of Education (USDOE) and is designed to generate the skills and motivation necessary for success in education beyond high school. Qualified professional staff administer an array of services, including assessment, academic placement in classes representing all of the major academic disciplines, and a six-week summer commuter/residential component on two postsecondary campuses focused on hands-on experiential learning. The program additionally assists low-income, first-generation high school students to overcome obstacles in their path that impede their educational growth (workshops/seminars); build self-esteem (counseling); increase educational aptitude (tutorials); and motivate all participants to successfully graduate from secondary school (college/cultural trips). Participants will be further encouraged and assisted in enrolling in a postsecondary institution of their choice; graduating with a baccalaureate degree and beyond. The UB program has been funded on the Bronx Community College campus since 1979 till present.

EDUCATIONAL TALENT SEARCH (ETS)

Number of Participants Served: 500 Annually- 450 H.S. / 50 M.S.

Profile: The Bronx Community College Educational Talent Search Program (BCCETS) is a federal grant funded by the United States Department of Education (USDOE). BCCETS goal is to create a pipeline that would bridge the gap between middle and secondary school, making the transition a successful one in generating the knowledge, skills, and motivation necessary for success in education beyond secondary school. Educational Talent Search, with the help of qualified professional staff, administers an array of services; assists low-income/first-generation high school students in overcoming obstacles in their path that impede their educational growth; builds self-esteem; increase educational aptitude; and motivates all participants to successfully graduate from secondary school (workshops/seminars, counseling, college/educational trips, tutoring, technical assistance workshops/seminars). Participants will be further encouraged and assisted in enrolling in a postsecondary institution of their choice; and graduating with a baccalaureate degree and beyond. The Talent Search Program has been funded on the Bronx Community College campus from 1981-1990 and refunded in 2002 till the present.
