Shabana Azmi has been performing in the play "Broken Images" for 14 years
Broken Images" is a play written by Girish Karnad, and it features Shabana Azmi in the lead role of Manjula Sharma, a Hindi writer. The play explores the themes of fragmented identity, societal expectations, and the struggles of a writer navigating her personal and professional life. Shabana Azmi plays both Manjula and her sister, Malini, showcasing the complexities of their relationship and the multifaceted nature of their identities
The play begins on a light and humorous note, as it introduces writer Manjula Sharma (Azmi) to the audience. When Manjula, a mediocre writer in Hindi, suddenly gets international acclaim and popularity for a book that she writes in English, she eventually starts wondering if she has betrayed her own language and identity. From a casual ambiance, as the act progresses around Manjula’s character and her life, it turns into a thriller which leaves the viewers very unsettled.Shabana Azmi essays two roles, rather two facets of one character and the constant dialogue between them is possible due to digital technology used on stage as it builds up to a captivating climax. The sets are minimalistic, with more emphasis on the lighting and that works in favour of the story. Broken Images is a short, gripping and flawless performance by the greatest actress that Raleigh has been waiting for a long time to come.
In the play two sisters, one an intellectually brilliant paraplegic, the other a plodding writer, live under the same roof, dependent on each other but inhabiting different emotional and linguistic worlds. The arrangement is fraught not only because the sisters are involved with the same man, but because they continually modify the image they have of each other and the world around.
The twenty first century is an era of electronic images. From every corner of our lives, images fling themselves at us, arguing, accusing, wheedling, until the every essence of our private lives seem threatened. But suppose the deadliest of these images were of one’s own shattered self?
Shabana Azmi plays both the sisters on stage and their many images, as they morph into one another, in one of the most challenging roles of her career.
