Brixton Black People’s Assembly

Operation Black Vote (OBV), in collaboration with The Humanity Project, is bringing forward the first Black People’s Assembly in Brixton - a community-led, participatory gathering designed to respond to the cost-of-living crisis through Black lived experience, community organising, cultural expression and collective decision-making. The project aims to strengthen Black community power, mutual aid, and collaboration across sectors.

Designed as a village-style gathering, the Assembly will bring together Black residents, community organisers, faith groups, creatives, local organisations and institutional partners for a day of dialogue, cultural expression and practical action. Participants will gain direct access to advice on housing, debt, food, benefits and wellbeing, alongside opportunities to speak with trusted community and voluntary organisations.

At the heart of the event will be a facilitated deliberative process exploring:

• How the cost-of-living crisis is impacting Black families
• What is working, and what is failing, in current systems
• What actions communities, organisations and institutions can take
• A shared vision for the type of borough Black residents want to live in

The Assembly will also issue a three-level challenge to the council, the voluntary sector and the community itself, urging each to take responsibility for structural change, improved coordination and sustainable mutual aid.

The outcomes of the Assembly will feed into ongoing working groups, borough-wide engagement and the development of a repeatable assembly model that can be adopted in other areas.
