About this Event

British Library Medieval Women Teacher CPD Part 3 – Medieval Women and Religion

Mon 2nd Dec 2024 5pm-7.30pm

The third of four free twilight CPD workshops which are aimed at Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 teachers and educators who are interested in how we teach and learn about Medieval Women.

This series of CPD supports our Medieval Women school visits programme.

They include free exhibition entry and a guided tour of the British Library's new exhibition, 'Medieval Women: In Their Own Words' supported by academic historians and teachers from the Teaching Medieval Women group in conjunction with the British Library learning team. Each session will be based around a series of different themes linked to current medieval topics in secondary education. Exhibition visits will take place between 5pm-6pm.

The exhibition highlights the voices and experiences of medieval women, examining the diverse roles and impact of women during this time, searching for what was lost or ‘hidden,' celebrating their many achievements, and connecting past lives with the issues and experiences of women today.

This first session takes us on a curated tour of select individuals, texts and objects in the exhibition to explore the theme of medieval women and religion, to see how women’s lives were empowered, structured and sometimes circumscribed by the dominant religious cultures of their day. It will highlight the ways in which we can investigate and learn more about how medieval women of different faiths lived and how religion could impact their every-day lives.

Speakers include

Dr Natasha Hodgson – Nottingham Trent University

Prof Jonathan Phillips – Royal Holloway University of London

Sam Jones – Bolder Academy

After a break for refreshments, the second part of the workshop will run from 6.15pm to 7.30pm held in the Learning Centre. It will be an interactive, participatory session with the opportunity to co-create resources with academics and teachers from examples in the exhibition for classroom use.
