What’s Special About This Concert:This concert features two rarely heard British composers, Ethel Smyth and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. Ethel Smyth joined the women’s suffrage movement, composing March of the Women as an anthem for the movement. Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was referred to as the “African Mahler” because of the success he achieved, paired with his symphonic writing. Austrian composer, Franz Joseph Haydn, composed his 104th symphony, titled the “London Symphony” for a trip to the symphony’s namesake city. It can’t be the British Invasion without music from the band that started it all, The Beatles.
