ASL requires a great deal of affect to effectively communicate meaning. Statistics show up to 90% of communication appears on the face and body and doesn’t reference the actual terms used, so why do interpreters spend 90% of their time focusing on 10% of the communication methods used in ASL? This workshop will start by addressing the common errors in that 10% and then turn our sights to the remaining 90 where we will practice the facial expressions and body language associated with the grammatical side of ASL followed by all those subtle forms of communication which require no words. We will see how to bring interpretations to life by adding the critically needed affect used by Deaf and Hearing consumers. We will laugh, we will cry and we will find ways to equivalently express the affect so often lacking in our interpretations. The inclusion of this affect will create a more equivalent and accessible experience for the Deaf. This workshop will change everyone’s perspective of what makes an incredible interpretation come to life as we learn how to Bring AFFECT to Life!
