For full details such as scheduled lunch and toilet stops please follow the booking link.
This scavenger hunt walk has been written for children aged 5 and up (though younger children are welcome!) and would be ideal if children have already studied - or are about to learn about - The Great Fire of London in Year 2 of Primary School. It will also feature a little bit about The Great Plague. Please see the full description below.
I was a Primary School teacher with a history specialism for over 10 years, so I am looking forward to teaching children again this summer!
Children will be given a small clipboard and pen for the walk. There will be two different levels of challenge which can be chosen at the start of the walk: the easier challenge is to spot 'clues' during the walk on statues, plaques etc. Children can be helped at any time with this by an adult.
The more difficult challenge will be to note particular letters from these clues, which at the end of the walk can be unscrambled using a special code to reveal a message. Samuel Pepys wrote his diary in code, which was only deciphered last century, so this is a gentle nod to that!
There will be a small prize for every child at the end.
Walk starts: The Monument, Fish Street Hill, London EC3R 8AH
Walk ends: St. Paul's Churchyard, London EC4M 8AD
An ideal follow-up activity would be to visit The Museum of London nearby, where they have a permanent exhibition about The Great Fire of London.
Description:
Samuel Pepys was the son of a tailor who rose up through society to become an important administrator at The Royal Navy Offices. He also kept a diary for a number of years, and it is this that tells us many enlightening things about what happened in London during The Great Plague of 1665 and The Great Fire of London of September 1666, as well as revealing much about life in London at this time.
This scavenger hunt guided walk starts at The Monument to the fire near Pudding Lane, where the fire broke out in the bakery of Thomas Farriner. The walk then includes the following locations, plus more, as we collect clues along the way:
- The actual location of Pepys' home and the Navy Offices where he worked.
- The church where Pepys and his wife Elizabeth are buried - along with over 300 plague victims.
- London Bridge, and where Pepys watched the fire burning from the river Thames as people scurried to rescue their belongings and get to boats.
- Cobbled streets in the original pre-fire locations.
- A tranquil churchyard of a church destroyed by the fire (and WW2 bombs) where we will take a break to eat our picnics.
- The oldest church in London, where Pepys watched the fire from its tower.
- Locations where Pepys writes about witnessing plague victims, the fire burning, and people fleeing their properties carrying their belongings.
- Numerous ancient alleyways and courtyards, one home to a coffee house that Pepys wrote about in 1660.
- The first building built after The Great Fire - on an ancient Roman road.
- St Paul's Cathedral, rebuilt after The Great Fire by Sir Christopher Wren and his team.
- And more...
