About this Event

Walk starts: Outside The Monument to The Great Fire of London, EC3R 8AH (there are benches nearby if you need to sit down)

Walk ends: near Bank Station

Halfway stop at the Royal Exchange for baby change. At this time you will be given 40 minutes to change baby at your own pace and get something to eat and drink at one of the many outlets around Bank before meeting the guide back at The Royal Exchange to resume the walk.

'Bring Your Baby' Guided London Walks are sensitively devised to suit parents and carers of even the tiniest babies to enjoy London’s history. We can stop whenever you like to feed and change - without the stress of feeling you are holding up the group. Because every participant brings their baby, patience and baby’s needs are at the forefront of each walk.

You are welcome to bring friends and family who do not also have a baby.

ANCIENT ALLEYWAYS & COFFEEHOUSES OF THE CITY OF LONDON

This walk is written and guided by City of London trained guide Sue Doe, co-writer of the best-selling 'Women from Hackney's History' (2021), which sold out its print run was reprinted in 2022.

Walk description:

The coffee houses in eighteenth century London were a vital cog in the wheels of business. From the many that catered for the City’s population sprang the Stock Exchange, Lloyds of London, the Baltic Exchange, auctioneers, scientific and philosophical societies and clubs.

They brought people together, to talk and share ideas and news.

They acted as employment exchanges, post offices and travel agents.

The alleyways of Cornhill were the site of eight of the most important, and there are still signs of them in the City today.

I’ll tell some stories of the businesswomen, and weave in those from Hackney who have emerged from recent research.

Stops include:

- The Royal Exchange

- The Bank of England

- Cornhill

- Site of Garraways Coffeehouse, and the story of an eminent transvestite

- Site of Jonathan’s Coffeehouse

- Site of Lloyds Coffeehouse

- Lombard Street and the beginning of modern banking

- Lloyds of London

- The Gherkin/Baltic Exchange site

- Devonshire Square

- Jamaica Wine House, originally the oldest coffeehouse in The City.

If on the day of the walk we are forecast to have very bad weather, I may have to postpone the walk. If it's a bit of light rain we will cope!

Every walk follows the usual health and safety guidelines, such as crossing at traffic lights where possible and having hazards pointed out to you at the start and along the route.

There may be times we have to stand in direct sunlight (although I will always choose shade where possible). Please bring all the necessary sun protection for yourself and your child.

It is recommended you bring appropriate drinks and snacks for the duration of the walk.

I will contact you with booking confirmation after you book. I will supply my mobile number in case of emergencies or in case you are running late. I will also ask you to provide me with a mobile number so you can be contacted before, during or after the walk, but this is *not for marketing purposes*.

If you like the look of any of my walks, but would prefer to book me privately, please make enquiries at [email protected]. This may particularly be the case if you have people interested who do not have babies.

Important notes about booking:

- Please feel free to invite baby-free friends.

- Children are the responsibility of the parent or guardian, and must be monitored by them at all times.

- Refunds or requests to move to a future event or date must be requested within 24 hours of the event commencing so that we can try to refill the space in adequate time.
