This summer Wheels and Wheelchairs is undertaking its most ambitious project since we did London to Brussels in 2018. Over 4 - 5 days in the summer the team will skate from Brighton to Paris via Newhaven, Dieppe and Forge les Eaux. We are aiming to arrive in Paris before the Opening Ceremony of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
Skaters and wheelchair users will set off on Saturday, August 24 supported by several vehicles, a luggage van and a back up cyclist. We will cover up to 70 km each day, arriving in Paris before Wednesday 28 August.
Our team will include a maximum of 6 wheelchair users, up to 40 skaters and a back up team of around 10 volunteers. Each wheelchair user will have a team of 3 or 4 skaters pushing them. Other skaters will include a lead marshall, a rear marshall and route marshalls who would go ahead to stop the traffic at every junction to ensure the safety of the cortege. We will also have a back up cyclist riding a cargo bike, carrying a small amount of water and snacks.
Our route will include traffic free cycle paths and quiet country lanes whenever possible, so whenever we are on the roads, we would also have a back up vehicle following us, with a large banner informing other road users what is ahead of them.
Itinerary –
Day 1 - We will aim to set off from Hove Lawns which is a few miles west of Brighton at 11am. We will follow the cycle path to Brighton Pier, then carry on past Brighton Marina onto the Undercliff Walkway.
We will stop briefly for water and snacks at Saltdean where the Undercliff Walkway ends. From there we will carry on along the coast to Peacehaven and eventually to Newhaven. We will have our evening meal in Newhaven before boarding the ferry for the 11pm crossing to Dieppe.
We will spend our first night on board the ferry, which is due to arrive in Dieppe at 5 am.
Day 2 – Dieppe to Forge les Eaux
We will have an early breakfast in Dieppe, then set off on the Avenue Verte, a 50 km traffic free cycle path which will take us to Forge les Eaux. We will stop for lunch in Neufchatel en Bray, and there will also be a mid morning break and another mid afternoon break for water and snacks.
Day 3 and Day 4 will be mainly on quiet country roads. Exact details of the route will be confirmed following our Route Check which will take place in May.
The final day will be our triumphal entry into Paris culminating in our arrival at the Stade de France where the athletics competitions of the Paralympic Games will take place.
Participants will then have the option of remaining in Paris to watch the Opening Ceremony of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games in the Fan Zone in Parc de La Villette, or return to London on the Eurostar before the festivities begin.
