Ellie and Elizabeth’s story – what your support means

You will be supporting Maudsley Charity to fund programmes which transform the lives of the people they support. People like Elizabeth, who was diagnosed with anorexia. Her mum, Ellie, explains:

“My daughter, Elizabeth, decided she wanted to get fit and healthy at around age 14. She came running with me, joined the gym - it was great to see her really get into physical activity and enjoy it.

As her GCSEs approached, she started working diligently on her studies and keeping up that level of exercise. She had lost quite a lot of weight. A family holiday revealed how much she was struggling to eat. After a 3-hour appointment with our local eating disorders unit, Elizabeth was diagnosed with anorexia.

I watched my daughter disappear before my eyes. She was doing HIIT workouts at 4am. She was passing out every other day. She couldn’t even pick up the phone, or answer the door, or see her own best friends. She had always been my amazing, bubbly girl that had lit up my life, it was absolutely heart-breaking.

When we were referred to the Maudsley, and that was when I started to get my daughter back. Day by day with lots of work, care and amazing communication, her weight started to increase, and her sparkle to come back. She started to be able to talk and have family meals.

There was nothing for her and now there is - this amazing chance of life.

The Maudsley offers the most empowering environment for young people who need support. The care, intelligence, empathy and strength of the environment is stunning, and I just want to have more of them - little Maudsley’s in every county. To supporters of this project, you have no idea of the impact that you are having. I cannot begin to thank you enough for anybody that is contributing to this amazing environment that saves lives.”

We ask all of our fantastic runners taking part to commit to reaching the fundraising target of £500 to help us support more people and families like Elizabeth and Ellie. We will do all that we can to support your fundraising efforts.

The Maudsley Charity exists to fund the people and projects striving to improve support, care and treatment to those who are unwell, may be becoming unwell or are at very high risk of becoming unwell.

We focus resources on projects that help people who are often neglected elsewhere and to prevent those who are becoming unwell get worse or enter crisis.

We work closely with South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College London. Together, we drive direct improvements in prevention, clinical care and treatment, not just in south London where we are based, but across the UK and beyond.
