About this Event

Description

In today's complex and interconnected world, the challenges surrounding substance use and addiction have taken on a multifaceted nature, highlighting the critical need for a comprehensive approach. This session, "Bridging the Gap: The Intersection of Substance Use Prevention, Recovery, and Social Determinants of Health," delves into the profound importance of understanding and addressing the intricate interplay between these three essential components.

Substance use prevention is not just about discouraging the initiation of substance use, but also includes strategies for reducing the harms associated with substance misuse. Recovery, on the other hand, is the path towards healing and reclaiming lives affected by addiction. These two aspects of the substance use spectrum are often seen as separate entities; however, to truly make a difference, they must be viewed as interconnected elements of a broader strategy.

Moreover, it is essential to recognize that substance use and addiction do not occur in a vacuum. Social determinants of health, including economic status, housing, access to healthcare, education, employment opportunities, and social support systems, play a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of substance use and recovery. Disparities in these determinants can contribute to substance use vulnerability, hinder access to treatment, and impact the likelihood of successful recovery.
