"Providers and Practitioners are beginning to bridge the gap between medical and mental care, forming partnerships aimed at improving patients’ physical and mental health, and reducing costs at the same time. Such holistic projects are underway in numerous states. The integration of behavioral health care and physical health care is essential. The old model of simply referring patients with mental illness to a primary care doctor doesn’t work. Instead, the patients need close, coordinated monitoring by both providers. It is often difficult for people with mental illnesses to get to a physician. They may be poor, homeless, or live chaotic lives. The mental illness itself may thwart their motivation. A significant correlation exists, for example, between chronic illnesses and serious depression. Major depressive disorder is found in 40 percent of cancer victims, 27 percent of diabetes patients, and 17 percent of people with heart disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."
"There seems to be a disconnect in our understanding of the source of mental illness and physical illness. The brain is a complex and powerful organ, but it often goes unexamined when trying to help someone who expresses feelings of depression, anxiety, and other ailments that are neurologically based. Recent developments in technology and science have allowed researchers to better understand the biochemistry and inner workings of the brain and have even allowed them to map out certain processes in the brain. These new practices have the potential to improve public health and, perhaps equally important, engage families more actively in the care of individuals suffering from mental disorders. A transformation of the existing mental health care system toward a system that utilizes a coordinated, multi-disciplinary, holistic approach not only may effectively bridge the existing gap between mental and physical health, but also may ultimately save lives."
