Bridging the Cultural Gap over Milk Tea
About this Event
Classical Chinese quatrains (絕句) are essential to childhood education in the Sinophone world, but sharing their rhythm and depth with English-speaking youth can be a challenge for Chinese-American parents. In the meantime, most mainstream Americans are utterly unfamiliar with these treasures of Chinese culture. Only faithful and beautiful English translations of classical Chinese quatrains can bridge this cultural gap.
Stanford-educated author Crystal Tai will host a family-friendly book signing mixer at Milk & Honey Cafe in Fremont. This drop-in event is specifically designed for parents and their pre-teens/teenagers (ages 10 to 17) to discover how English translations can make classical Chinese poetry accessible, engaging, and meaningful for American-born youth. It's remarkable that all of the book's English translations preserve the original rhyme schemes of the classical Chinese quatrains, whether the rhyme scheme is AABA or ABCB, while looking natural and idiomatic.
This is an open-house-style event on Saturday, Sept 26 in celebration of the Moon Festival on Sept 25. Feel free to drop in any time between 4 pm and 6 pm to
