TCC Partner Consultant and author Rachel Carillo Fairchild will lead two breakout sesssionsat the Bridges Connecting Language & Literacy Conference, sponsored by the Kern County Office of Education. These sessions are focused on a question that matters deeply to educators: How do we create the right conditions for students to become more capable, confident, and independent readers, writers, thinkers, and communicators?
Rachel’s sessions will explore two powerful approaches:
Map–Talk–Write™: Closing Opportunity Gaps by Building Language, Thinking, and Agency
Participants will experience a practical framework that helps multilingual learners organize their thinking, develop academic language through purposeful talk, and move toward increasingly independent writing—without lowering the level of rigor.
When Phonics Is Not Enough: Using the Active View of Reading to Evolve Tier 3 Literacy Support
This session looks beyond decoding to consider what students may need when structured literacy and phonics intervention have strengthened foundational skills, but significant reading gaps remain. Rachel will explore how the Active View of Reading can help educators identify more precise next steps for Tier 3 support.
