Bridges are all around you! These important structures allow people and/or vehicles to travel above rivers, valleys, other roads, railroad tracks and other obstacles.
This event is split into two sessions:
𝐒𝐄𝐒𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝟏: 𝐊-𝟐𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝟏𝟏:𝟏𝟓𝐚𝐦 - 𝟏𝟐𝐩𝐦
Each student will build a structure, and ultimately a Warren Truss bridge, based on a template with toothpicks and marshmallows (Kraft’s Jet Puffed). Staff from the Minnesota Department of Transportation will be on hand to answer any questions and assist students with the build!
𝐒𝐄𝐒𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝟐: 𝟑𝐫𝐝 - 𝟏𝟐𝐭𝐡 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝟏𝟐:𝟏𝟓𝐩𝐦 - 𝟏:𝟏𝟓𝐩𝐦
Work in teams to build a 6-foot-long truss bridge. Each team will have people acting in different roles, just like in a real construction project. You’ll build the bridge, test it, crawl through it, and then demolish it! Learn about elements of a basic truss bridge, the different forces engineers must design for, and how they play out in a real bridge that carries traffic (you!). This real-world engineering experience will be led by staff from the Minnesota Department of Transportation who will be on hand to answer questions and assist the group, as needed.
