Brian Bowie - Celebration of Life A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday Oct 6,2024, 4-6 PM at the Cape St. Claire club house, 1223 River Bay Rd, Annapolis, MD 21409. We would appreciate an RSVP to [email protected] so that we can plan appropriately. To all the car guys, feel free to bring your custom cars, bikes, vans. This is Brian’s Last Cruise.
Brian Leroy Bowie was born March 29, 1945, to Clarence and Mabel (Wiles) Bowie (both deceased) in Baltimore, MD. He spent a good deal of his childhood living in a multigenerational household in Linthicum, MD where he loved to terrorize his elder sister Marlene Bowie Bytella (deceased).
The family moved to Annapolis where his family and other relatives built waterfront houses on Whitehall Creek. This is where he found a love for boats and water skiing. He even built his own water skis. He said he designed one for creating a large rooster tail so that he could soak midshipmen and their dates when sailing in the area. Yes, he was mischievous.
He graduated from Annapolis High School in 1963. He learned drafting at the Maryland Institute of Art (now MICA) and landed a job with Westinghouse (now Northrup Grumman) Oceanic in Annapolis and retired in 2003.
He loved music and was involved in the folk music scene in Annapolis. Although he was not a performer, he had a knack for sound equipment and recording. He had a sound booth built into his Cape St. Claire house where he recorded demo tapes for local musicians. Over time, he moved to doing DJ work at car events.
He was skilled at customizing cars and trucks. His first custom van was a 1974 Dodge named Vanishing Point. He was a member of Eastern United Vans, Tidewater Vans, and helped form the Maryland Van Council. Eventually, he specialized in1960s vintage Dodge A100 vans. He founded the A100 Van Association and was a wealth of knowledge to many. A highlight of his A100 obsession was helping in an episode of the TV show Overhaulin’ which is run by the car designer Chip Foose. Over the years, he drifted away from vans and moved toward older cars. He was a founding member of Wheels From the Past car club in Edgewater, MD.
In 2021, his health began to decline, but he enjoyed going to local car shows and keeping care givers on their toes with his antics. He peacefully passed July 23, 2024 at home. He is survived by Kathie Lambert, his wife of 41 years as well as his nieces, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
