Brewster Ridge Field Trip
April 7th, 2024, with Logan Wagner
Details:
Let's go birding! This trip will explore the borderlands of Mesa County on Brewster Ridge and the Utah State Line. Way out past the edge of development, Brewster Ridge boasts an interesting arrangement of bird species. One surprising species that can show up occasionally is the Long-Billed Curlew, a shorebird that looks well out of place in the desert. Curlews visit the grass-topped ridges between April and May on their route north. This outing can also turn up some of our summer sparrows like the Chipping, Sagebrush, Brewer's, Vesper, and Black-Throated sparrows. Sage Thrasher, Western Meadowlark, Pinion Jay, and Loggerhead Shrike are all welcome sights on the great stands of borderlands sagebrush and grassy-topped juniper ridges.
Logistics:
This will be a half-day trip from 8 am to 12 pm.
We will meet at the Fruita CDOT Rest Area to carpool at 8:00 am: Fruita Welcome Center https://maps.app.goo.gl/SQ1qdTGic7PUWuYP6
Bring binoculars and come prepared to do a few easy walkabouts around the borderlands.
