Travel down to the Cross Street Music Hall to see a night of mystic new happenings. 'The Amber Well' and 'Memories of Green' are two newly founded bands performing original works that have been long on the brew. Works brewing a base of jazz and improvisation, a swig of neo-classicalism and toppings of raw vocal and choral sounds, pushing these fine musicians to reveal new worlds.
The Amber Well consists of 9 musicians who come from choral, classical and jazz/improvisation backgrounds. Out of these musicians a 6-piece choir and 4-piece quartet emerges from the mist. The Amber Well will be performing a 45-minute-long piece which was written by band leader Clyde Saniga, specifically for this ensemble. It fuses together free-improvisation, a cappella choir and the blues in one seamless arch. The piece, named ‘Ouroboros’, delves into a seemingly complete cycle of confused self-discovery. Memories of Green is a quartet led by vocalist Rory Newman, featuring Audrey Hart on keys, Claire Abougelis on bass and Paddy Walter on drums. The quartet will play Rory’s compositions, ranging in style from contemporary vocal jazz ‘songs’ to more abstract, atmospheric pieces exploring wordless singing, odd meters, non-functional harmony and group improvisation.
