This Wednesday 17th September, at Queen St Brewhouse at 7:30pm, I'll be showing Edgar Wright's second film in the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy "Hot Fuzz" (15) (2007), starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Jim Broadbent, Paddy Considine, Rafe Spall, Olivia Colman and Timothy Dalton. "Hot Fuzz" is a buddy cop action comedy based on over 100 action films that influenced director Edgar Wright and the film's main star and co-writer Simon Pegg. As of 2020, Empire Magazine named the film the 67th greatest film of the 21st century and is the second most successful film in the "Cornetto Trilogy".Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) is an elite London police officer with proficiency and an immaculate record of arrests, which make his colleagues look inadequate. His superiors reassigned him to a rural town in Gloucestershire called Sandford, where nothing much happens. Angel is partnered up with officer Danny Butterman (Nick Frost) and is frustrated by his incompetences and his other colleagues and the Neighbourhood Watch Alliance (NWA)'s. One day, two local actors are found dead in a car crash, and Angel suspects foul play, which is dismissed by his colleagues. Angel's suspicions are further aroused by a series of gruesome deaths in the village.
The title "Hot Fuzz" is based on two-word action film titles such as Lethal Weapon (1987), Die Hard (1988) and Point Break (1991) which took eighteenth months to write a first draft based on various action films for plot and dialogue ideas. Director Edgar Wright also went through the effort to keep the film's length at 2 hours, which is quite common for a popcorn action movie. Other elements include Edgar Wright's amateur film "Dead Right" (1993), which he described as 'Lethal Weapon and Dirty Harry set in Somerset'. Since Wright's first feature "Shaun of the Dead" (2004), the use of Cornetto ice cream has appeared being eaten by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and was officially dubbed the "Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy" after "Hot Fuzz".
