One of the most important works of political cinema, The Battle of Algiers dramatically recreates a pivotal year in the long Algerian struggle for independence from France. Shot on the streets of Algiers after the Algerian War in a documentary style with mostly non-professional actors who experienced the real Battle of Algiers, this film exposes the machinations of modern warfare, terrorism, and colonialism. This screening will be followed by a conversation with filmmaker Brett Story (Union) exploring how The Battle of Algiers has shaped her artistic practice.
