For the December 2024 edition of The Olive, please help us in welcoming Bret Crowle & Samantha Jones.BRET CROWLE is an emerging author who was born and raised in rural Alberta. Her debut poetry collection, Jesus is a Voyeur, published by Frontenac House, is a collection of feminist gothic poetry which deconstructs and explores the intertwined roles of femininity, sexuality, and Catholicism while growing up and maturing in this rural space. When she’s not writing, Crowle can also be found plunking on a keyboard, practicing one-woman renditions of her favourite Broadway shows, and waiting for spring so she can splash in puddles.
SAMANTHA JONES (she/her) is an earth scientist, writer, and editor based in Moh’kins’tsis (Calgary), Treaty 7 territory, also home to Métis Nation of Alberta, Districts 5 and 6. Sam describes herself as a mixed-race woman or as both Black Canadian and white settler with roots in Nova Scotia, Québec, and Ontario. She is a journal and magazine enthusiast with words in THIS, Grain, CV2, Room, GeoHumanities, the Fiddlehead, and elsewhere. Sam has two experimental chapbooks that explore living with OCD—Site Orientation (2022; The Blasted Tree) and wallpaper (2024; Model Press). Her full-length poetry collection, Attic Rain, was published by NeWest Press in September 2024.
