Shelterbelts are those long rows of trees one sees on North America’s prairies and plains, and Brown's newest work showcases how farmstead shelterbelts have not only shaped the rural landscape of the prairies, but also influenced how people live with and on the land. These interviews, explorations, and documentation explore people’s relationships with trees throughout Canada's history, their ecological significance, and their place in past and present changing rural landscape and inhabitants.
Brenda J. Brown has lived in Winnipeg, Manitoba, for twenty years. She is a professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Manitoba, teaching Ecology + Design, Field Studies, Design Research, and various undergraduate and graduate Environmental Design and Landscape Architecture Studios. She has investigated landscapes and landscape architecture of Mexico, the United States, various European countries, and Canada. Brown’s work focuses on revealing natural and cultural landscape ecosystem phenomena, processes and relationships.
