Breathe Easy

“I am generally against breathing exercises in the commonly accepted notion of breathing exercises where I would be teaching someone that they must breathe like this or like that. ... if you tell someone how they should breathe...the instructions usually destroy their breathing.”
-Moshe Feldenkrais
This movement class will be based in the Feldenkrais Method. My approach is also informed and influenced by 30+ years experience of teaching the Alexander Technique.
Breathing is the single thing we have repeated more than anything else in our lives, which makes it our most practiced habit. The capacity for freedom and adaptability in the movement of breath is inseparable from the habitual muscular patterns through the whole body.
These habitual restrictions are connected with states of stress, fear and anxiety. Working with the breath is a direct route into modulating the nervous system, so needs to be practised skillfully.
Years of movement and postural habits which involve fixation in the chest, compression through the spine, pulling in of the belly, tightening the neck and shoulders all contribute to a loss of good functioning.
In this class there will be an emphasis on slowing down and taking time, encouraging old patterns of tension throughout the whole body to unwind so you can discover a new sense of pleasure, spaciousness and ease in your breath.
Cost £12
