Who helped you meet your basic needs?Have you supported your children, grandchildren, or other family members in meeting their basic needs? Assisting them with safe and stable housing, keeping their lights on, paying for their phone bill, or just purchasing shampoos, toothpaste, or laundry detergent?
What would you or your children do if you didn't have support or know how to find the resources for your basic needs?
While none of us can fully comprehend what it is like to walk in the shoes of those with lived experience in foster care, through simulations Breaking Down Barriers attempts to do so. Come to learn and understand how the impact barriers of employment, knowledge & skills gaps, money & finances, support, and systems have on young people. With you, we can work together to address these barriers.
Without a strong foundation of basic needs, young people struggle to achieve their goals and achievements like attending college or a technical school, entering the workforce, or continuing on their journey to self-sufficiency. We know that removing the barriers to accessing basic needs can greatly improve the futures of young people with foster care experience.
Join us for our annual signature event, Breaking Down Barriers with Basic Needs. May is National Foster Care Awareness Month and you have the opportunity to be part of the celebration of young people with lived experience.
The centerpiece of this event will be an interactive activity led by young people with lived experience. You will be moving from station to station to learn from young people so that you may "walk in their shoes” for one night. Each guest will be provided with a profile that will offer a glimpse into the challenges of accessing resources to meet your basic needs with little to no support. As you navigate through these barriers, you will learn directly from young people how Foster Success provides support in helping you meet your basic needs.
